Geriatric medicine
It is only within the last 2 decades that medicine has recognized that diseases afflicting the elderly required a better understanding of the changes of aging. Additionally, there is an increase in the elderly population as people are living longer and the baby boomer generation matures.
Many older persons have already gravitated to natural medicines, with the elderly population being one of the biggest consumers of natural products. This is in large part because of the relatively few side effects of natural medicines and the fact that most of us have grown up with them.
As a rule, the elderly population presents a much greater diagnostic challenge to the physician because of the complexity and number of illness and conditions accumulated over a life time. In a managed care system, many of these conditions are not addressed on a routine basis because prevention and wellness are not “cost effective”.  Thus, many elderly patients are left to manage their own illnesses and often find themselves in a quandary as to what to do next.
Naturopathic physicians, being trained as primary care, family practice doctors, are focused on prevention and wellness issues because they prevent morbidity and premature mortality. It is not necessarily the quantity of ones life but the quality of their life that most persons covet. Naturopathic physicians treat the person, not the disease and will spend the necessary time to get to know you as an individual.
